Wind Safe Hurricane Protection — FAQs
We’ve pulled together answers to the most common questions homeowners in Naples & Southwest Florida ask us. If you don’t see yours, just give us a call — we’re here to help.
Hurricanes & Storm Risk
When is hurricane season, and how far ahead should I order protection?
Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Because products are custom-built, lead times range from 2 to 8 weeks. We strongly recommend planning ahead, not waiting for a storm warning.
What’s the difference between a hurricane watch and a warning?
Watch: Conditions possible within 36–48 hours. Time to prepare.
Warning: Conditions expected within 24 hours. Secure your home immediately.
Products & Options
What types of hurricane protection do you offer?
Roll-down shutters, accordion shutters, clear storm panels, hurricane screens (manual or motorized), impact windows & doors, and decorative options like Bahama or Colonial shutters.
Can I mix different types on the same home?
Absolutely. Many customers use different products depending on exposure, budget, and design preferences.
Will motorized shutters work if the power is out?
Yes. All motorized systems include a manual override for safety.
Installation & Permitting
Do I need a county permit to install hurricane protection?
Yes. In Collier and Lee Counties, hurricane protection products require a building permit. Wind Safe handles all permitting on your behalf — including drawings, engineering, and county submissions — so you don’t have to worry about it.
How long does permitting take?
County review times vary, but typically range from 2–6 weeks. This is factored into the overall project timeline.
Will my HOA need to approve shutters or screens?
Most HOAs do require approval for exterior changes. We assist by providing product cut sheets, color samples, and drawings to streamline the approval process. While HOAs can set style or color guidelines, Florida law prevents them from prohibiting code-compliant hurricane protection.
Can you install during new construction?
Yes. Planning protection during construction often saves money and allows us to integrate hardware more cleanly.
Maintenance & Warranty
How do I keep my shutters working smoothly?
Operate them once a month, clean tracks, and lubricate moving parts with clear silicone spray. We also recommend an annual inspection.
What warranty coverage do you provide?
All Wind Safe installations include a full parts and labor warranty. Ask your consultant for specific coverage terms by product type.
Costs & Financing
What is the typical cost?
Costs vary widely by product and home size. Accordion shutters average lower than motorized roll-downs or impact windows. We provide free in-home estimates tailored to your property.
Do you offer financing?
Yes — we offer flexible financing plans so you can spread payments out while still protecting your home.
Service Areas & Codes
What areas do you serve?
We serve all of Collier and Lee Counties, including Naples, Marco Island, Bonita Springs, Estero, and Ft. Myers.
Do your products meet code requirements?
Yes. All products are tested and approved under the Florida Building Code and Miami-Dade standards.
Safety & Usability
What about emergency exits?
All systems are designed with manual overrides, and select products include safety features like automatic opening during emergencies.
Can I operate shutters remotely?
Yes. Many of our motorized systems include remote control or can be paired with WiFi hubs for app-based operation.
Choosing a Contractor
How do I know I’m hiring the right company?
Look for a state-licensed and insured contractor, with a proven track record in hurricane protection. At Wind Safe, we’ve been protecting homes in SWFL since 2012, with hundreds of installations each year.
